What different types of green peas are there?
With garden peas there is a distinction between two seed types. A type with round, smooth seeds when ripe and a type with crinkled seeds. Crinkle-seeded peas have a higher sugar content and a lower starch content than round peas. Crinkly seeded peas are tastier and much sweeter due to this starch / sugar composition.
When do I sow low peas? How do I grow low bush peas?
Sow peas in the garden from February to May. It is also possible to pre-sow indoors and then transplant out later.
Sow the peas 2-3cm deep in rows with a row distance of about 45cm and 5cm apart. Make sure the soil remains sufficiently moist during growth. Do not use fresh farmyard manure.
Brushwood or netting for support is not necessary for common peas, but it usually makes it easier to pick the pods.
When do I sow climbing peas? How do I grow climbing peas?
Sow climbing peas in the garden from February to May. It is also possible to pre-sow indoors and then transplant out later.
Sow the peas 2-3cm deep in rows from North to South with a row distance of 100-150cm and 10cm apart. In this way the tall peas get enough sunlight. Provide adequate support by means of mesh or brushwood / bamboo sticks.
Crop rotation
It is wise to also use crop rotation with peas. Only put peas in the same spot once every 6 years to minimize the risk of infections.
When can I harvest garden peas?
Green garden peas can be harvested from June to the end of July.
Pick the pods while the peas are still juicy. If you pick it too late, the peas will have a mealy taste. Regular picking is therefore advisable.
