Strawberries grown in your own garden or on a balcony are juicier, more fruity and have a sweeter taste.

Strawberries are light germinators, so do not cover strawberry seeds with soil but only lightly press the seeds with the palm of your hand. Light gives the strawberry seeds the stimulus to germinate.

Tip: Sprinkle some straw around the strawberry plant, so the strawberries do not get dirty and there is less chance of contamination by fungi and bacteria.

Eggplant is also known as 'egg plant' or 'egg fruit'. The taste is neutral, which means that the eggplant fits in many dishes. Eggplants can be combined well with seasonings such as garlic, basil and thyme.

Tip: Sprinkle slices of sliced aubergine with some salt, this will make the aubergine less bitter.

Zucchini's is a very rewarding plant. With a few plants you will have enough courgettes for the whole neighborhood.

Harvest courgettes at an early stage (15-20 cm), that's when they taste best. The courgette plant continues to produce new courgettes in this way.

Did you know that the flowers of the zucchini are also edible. Fried zucchini flowers are a real delicacy in Italy and Greece.

Cucumber is one of the most popular vegetables to sow yourself. With a number of plants you can supply the entire neighborhood with cucumbers.

Many new cucumber varieties are self-pollinating, which makes growing cucumbers much easier. Self-pollinating F1 varieties ensure a very high yield of cucumbers.

Very popular are also the mini cucumbers or snack cucumbers. These small cucumbers of 10-15 cm are delicious as a healthy snack in between or to use in salads.

Bell peppers, like most peppers, are a Capsicum Annuum variety. Because they contain almost no capsaicin, bell peppers do not taste hot.

Unripe peppers are green and change color as they ripen. Red and orange bell peppers also acquire a much sweeter taste as they ripen. Red peppers contain 3 times as much vitamin C as an orange, an orange bell pepper even a little more.

Peppers can be used ripe, unripe, fresh and dried. A ripe pepper is 3 times as hot as an unripe pepper.

Make sure the temperature stays above 18 degrees. At lower temperatures, the growth of pepper plants stops. It is therefore preferable to grow indoors, in a greenhouse or in a sunny sheltered place.

Pumpkins are best known for hollowing out and decorating them for Halloween. There are also championships and competitions to grow the heaviest pumpkins. The heaviest giant pumpkin comes from Belgium with a weight of 1190kg. The record in the Netherlands is almost 670kg.

Pumpkins are of course also very tasty to eat, think of pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie.

Most gourds are inedible and are used for decoration.

Grow your tomato plants from seeds yourself! Tomatoes are easy, very tasty and fun to grow yourself. By growing tomatoes from seeds, your choice of the different tomato varieties is much greater. Enjoy delicious tomatoes all summer long.

Terrace or balcony? Then choose a low bush tomato, you do not have to thieves it. Healthy snack in between? Then choose a mini snack tomato plant.

Okra are pod-like fruits of 5-15 cm and even resemble green beans in taste. Okra is widely used in Mediterranean and Eastern cuisines, especially in combination with aubergines, courgettes and tomatoes.

Harvest the Okra fruits at an early stage so they don't get tough.
