Description

The Phaseolus vulgaris Prelude is a firm double bean that is ideally picked young for the best taste and texture. This runner bean is less suitable for later cultivation, but offers a rich harvest of high quality in spring and early summer.

The runner bean Prelude grows well in humus-rich, slightly moist soil and needs a lot of warmth during germination and early growth phase. This versatile bean is easy to grow, both in the open ground and under glass.

  • Firm double bean: Ideal for picking young for optimum flavour and texture.
  • Suitable for early crops: Less suitable for later crops.
  • Easy to grow: Suitable for both glasshouse and open ground cultivation.
  • Compact growth: Perfect for smaller gardens thanks to the bush bean format.
  • Highly productive: Reliable yield in a small space.

Growing method for bush beans

Open ground cultivation

Bunch beans can generally be sown slightly earlier than pole beans. Because bush beans do not require support, choosing a suitable location is easier.

Sow the runner beans directly in the open ground from mid-May to mid-July. For early cultivation, sow under glass from mid-April and plant out in the second half of May.

Greenhouse cultivation

For early cultivation, runner beans can be pre-sown in a greenhouse from the end of March to mid-May.

Location

During germination and during the first growth period, the runner beans need a lot of warmth. After that, beans also need sufficient warmth and moderately moist soil. Therefore, choose a sunny and sheltered location in the garden or greenhouse. Especially with early or late sowing, the results are strongly dependent on the weather.

In wet and cold weather, the beans germinate poorly, so do not sow earlier than the specified period. The beans can also be soaked overnight to speed up germination.

All runner beans require humus-rich, slightly moist soil, but do not use fresh manure, as this contains too much nitrogen and causes too much leaf growth.

Keep a planting distance of approximately 40 x 10 cm.
