Plant red shallots directly in the garden from February to April. Choose a sunny and warm location where the soil does not get too wet.
Plant the red shallots about 2.5 to 5 cm deep in rows with a spacing of 10 cm and 25 cm between the rows. Make sure that plant shallots receive sufficient water during the first few weeks so that the shallots can root well.
Fertilize red shallots only with potassium-rich and low-nitrogen fertilizer. This ensures a better resistance and shelf life of the shallots.
Do not use nitrogen-rich fertilizer such as compost, manure or cow manure pellets, this will do more harm than good. A lot of nitrogen creates a lot of leaves and that is a shame. Place insect netting over the shallots, if necessary, so that the birds cannot reach them.
The red shallots can be harvested from July to August. After harvesting, let the shallots dry thoroughly, this takes about 4 weeks. Tie and/or twist the shallot leaves and dry the shallots while hanging. After 4 weeks, the foliage and roots can be removed and the shallots can be stored in a cool and dark place.
