Cucuzi Italian Snake

The Cucuzi Italian Snake is a traditional Italian gourd that grows on a leafy climbing vine. The fruits are long, slender, and light green, ranging from 38 to 91 cm in length. For the best flavor and texture, harvest them when they are 20–30 cm long. The white flesh is juicy, firm, and pleasantly mild in taste—similar to zucchini, but slightly sweeter and nuttier.

  • Mild, subtly nutty flavor
  • Perfect for curries, soups, or stir-fry dishes
  • Long fruits up to 90 cm, but best harvested at 20–30 cm
  • Produces white flowers and grows as a climbing plant

Cucuzza gourds grow best upright on a trellis or fence, but can also twist and curl playfully if grown along the ground. Select smooth, pale green fruits without blemishes for the best shelf life.

How to sow Cucuzi?

Sow from late April to mid-June in a sheltered seedbed outdoors. Once germinated and the plant is strong enough, transplant it to a sunny, fertile spot with enough space. Ideally, use a trellis, fence, or pergola to let the fruits hang freely—this encourages attractive shapes and even drying.

When to harvest Cucuzi?

Harvest young for the best flavor experience, at 20–30 cm in length.
