Sow indoors in April and transplant into pots. From mid-May, the young plants can go outside, or sow directly into open ground at that time.
Harvest pumpkins from September through October, but always before the first night frost. A pumpkin is ripe when the stems start to dry and show small wrinkles or cracks. Growth will have stopped for a while and the pumpkin will have a duller skin with a deeper color.
Leave about 5 to 8 cm of stem attached when harvesting. Do so in dry weather, and avoid bruising or damaging the pumpkins. Store them in a dry, frost-free place, and avoid stacking them.
