Cayenne Chili Pepper (Capsicum annuum)
A spicy pepper but mild in taste. The pepper plant produces long, thin peppers of about 20 centimeters long. The red peppers are wrinkled and irregular in shape. The peppers change color from green to red and are often used in sauces. Plant height approximately 100 cm.
Habanero Chocolate (Capsicum chinense)
A very hot, 2 to 6 centimeter long chili pepper, diameter 2 to 3 cm. The peppers change color from green to yellow, orange to red / reddish brown. Plant height approximately 120 cm.
Serrano (Capsicum annuum)
A hot chili pepper (hotter than Jalapeño) with spherical fruits of approximately 6 centimeters long. The peppers change colour from green to red, very suitable for salsa sauces. Plant height approximately 50-150 cm.
Pepecchia Tondo Rosso (Capsicum baccatum)
A mild, sweet, spicy berry-like chili pepper with a round shape. The peppers resemble tomatillos. Plant height approximately 100 cm.
Caloro (Capsicum annuum)
Conical, mild chili peppers of 10 cm long and a diameter of 5 cm. The peppers change colour from green to yellow and finally to red. Plant height approximately 60 - 90 cm.
Cultivation method / sowing pepper seeds
Peppers are plants that need warmth. The seeds of these plants must already be at the right temperature before sowing. Start sowing in February. Mix four parts potting soil and one part sharp sand.
- Place the seeds and cutting soil in a heated room the day before.
- Moisten the soil well and place the seeds on top.
- Give lukewarm water, sprinkle a thin layer of sand over it and cover the whole thing with a glass plate or use a (heated) growing or greenhouse.
- Place on the windowsill or above the radiator at a temperature of 20-25 °C so that the soil temperature remains around 28-30 °C.
- As soon as the first green shoots become visible, remove the glass plate.
- Water occasionally with a spray bottle or plant sprayer.
- After about ten weeks you can plant the plants (outside) in a pot. Wait until the end of May (after the Ice Saints) and preferably until the beginning of June.
Planting out in a pot
It is best to plant out peppers in a pot. This way you can easily move them with the sun. The plants do not only need warmth while growing. They prefer a sunny, sheltered spot.
- Take a large pot of about 15 litres.
- Place three plants in the pot, at the same distance from each other and as close to the edge of the pot as possible.
- Place the pot preferably near a sunny brick wall facing south: the bricks still give off quite a bit of heat in the evening.
- Always remove the first flower that grows on the plant, this way you will get a better harvest later.
- After four to six weeks you should fertilize the soil every week. Do this with liquid fertilizer for flowering houseplants or fertilizers for flower boxes and tub plants
Harvesting peppers
Peppers are ready to pick when you can no longer push the flesh in. Peppers are best cut while retaining as long a stem as possible.
