Chive seeds are one of the most well-known and used herb seeds that you can grow yourself. The Chive is a clump-shaped perennial with hollow tubular leaves. Chives can be cut all year round, chives will then grow back on their own.
How do you use Chives?
Chopped chives give a mild onion flavor to salads, soups, omelets, fish and sauces. Only add the finely chopped chives to a dish just before serving, do not let it boil. The flowers are also edible, use them whole or finely chopped in salads and as a garnish.
How do you grow Chives?
Sow the chive seeds outdoors in rows or in flower pots from March to August. In the fall, place a few plants from the garden in a pot, cut off the leaves and let them grow indoors.
Because chive seeds germinate best in the colder days, it is best to sow the Chive seeds in early spring. To promote leaf growth in the second and subsequent years, the flower stems should be removed. The first year the chive plant will not be big enough to harvest fully, the second year it has become a beautiful mature chive plant. Harvest the chives when the stems are about 15cm.
