When is a pumpkin ripe?

Harvest pumpkins from September through October, always before the first frost. A pumpkin is ripe when the stem starts to dry out and shows small wrinkles or cracks. Growth has usually stopped, and the skin appears slightly duller. The color typically becomes deeper at this stage.

Harvesting pumpkins

Leave about 5 to 8 cm (2–3 inches) of stem on the pumpkin when harvesting. Harvest during dry conditions and avoid bruising or damaging the fruit. Store in a dry, frost-free place and avoid stacking the pumpkins.
