How do you grow onions?

Sow the organic seed onions in the period from March to mid-April at a row distance of 25 cm, thin out at 5-10 cm in the row. Sowing depth: about 5 mm. Placing strongly scented plants such as chamomile, savory and carrots in the immediate vicinity of the onions could have a disruptive effect on the onion fly.

Onions grow best on relatively heavier, clayey soils. This certainly applies to the 'Red Baron'. Seed onions need a relatively long time to grow and ripen well.

When do you harvest seed onions?

In the months of August - September, the foliage of the sowing onions will flatten (or 'iron') and die. Pull the onions out of the ground, foliage and all, and let the bulbs dry in an airy spot, out of full sun. The onions can be stored well into spring, provided they are kept cool and dry.
