Plant late yellow onion sets directly in the open ground from March to April. Choose a sunny and warm location where the soil does not get too wet.
Plant the onion sets about 2.5 to 5 cm deep in rows with a spacing of 10 cm and 25 cm between the rows. Make sure that the onion sets receive sufficient water during the first few weeks so that the onion sets can root well.
Fertilize onion sets only with potassium-rich and nitrogen-poor fertilizer. This ensures better tuber formation, resistance and shelf life of the onion sets.
Do not use nitrogen-rich fertilizer such as compost, manure or cow manure pellets, this will do more harm than good. A lot of nitrogen ensures a lot of leaves but little tuber formation, and that is a shame. Place insect netting over the onions, if necessary, so that the birds cannot reach them.
The late yellow onion sets can be harvested from July to August. After harvesting, you must allow onion sets to dry thoroughly, this takes about 4 weeks. Tie and/or twist the tops of the onions together and dry the onions while hanging. After 4 weeks, the foliage and roots can be removed and the onion sets can be stored in a cool and dark place.
