Growing method runner beans

Sowing Open ground cultivation

Runners can generally be sown slightly earlier than pole beans. Because runner beans do not need support, choosing a suitable location is easier. Sow the runner beans directly in the open ground from mid-May to mid-July. For early cultivation, sow under glass from mid-April and plant out in the second half of May.

Sowing Greenhouse cultivation

For early cultivation, runner beans can be pre-sown in a greenhouse from April to mid-May.

Location

During germination and during the first growth period, the runner beans need a lot of warmth. After that, beans also need sufficient warmth and moderately moist soil. Therefore, choose a sunny and sheltered location in the garden or greenhouse. Especially with early or late sowing, the results are strongly dependent on the weather.

In wet and cold weather, the beans germinate poorly, so do not sow earlier than the specified period.

All runner beans require humus-rich, slightly moist soil, but do not use fresh manure, as this contains too much nitrogen and causes too much leaf growth.

Keep a planting distance of approximately 45x10 cm.
