Sowing French green beans
Open field cultivation
French beans need support, for example use crossed bamboo canes in rows, preferably in a north-south direction. Place the sticks in rows 150 cm apart, leaving 40 cm between the sticks in the row. Use 3-5 seeds per stick, about 3 cm deep.
Sow the pole beans in the open ground from mid-May to early July. For early cultivation, sow under glass from the end of April and plant out in the second half of May.
Greenhouse cultivation
French beans can be sown in a greenhouse from early April to mid-July. Use rope or climbing nets so that the pole beans can swing themselves up.
Location
Beans need sufficient heat and moderately moist soil. Therefore, choose a sunny and sheltered position in the garden or greenhouse.
In wet and cold weather, the beans germinate poorly. So do not sow earlier than the indicated period: May to July. During germination and in the first growing period, pole beans need a lot of heat. The beans can also be pre-soaked overnight to speed up germination.
Do not use fresh manure, it contains too much nitrogen.
Harvesting green beans
Harvest green beans from July to September. Carefully pick the beans from the plant or use harvesting scissors.
