Bintje is a medium-early potato variety and can be planted from the beginning to the end of April.
You can also pre-germinate seed potatoes to be able to harvest 2 weeks earlier. To do this, place the seed potatoes at room temperature in daylight so that they develop short purple shoots. After 4 weeks, you can then plant the seed potatoes in the open ground with a good head start.
Plant or plant the small seed potatoes in loosened soil in rows of 60cm with a mutual distance of 40cm. Plant the seed potatoes about 10cm deep with the shoots pointing upwards.
After about 6 weeks, you should earth up the potato plants, which means that you ensure that the potatoes are not exposed. Keep pushing a pile of soil against the plant, this will also cause the plants to form more runners and therefore more potatoes. Also make sure that you regularly weed the weeds.
You can harvest potatoes from June to July. Pre-germinated potatoes can be harvested about 2 weeks earlier. Scoop the potato plant upwards with a rake and remove all the potatoes from the ground. Let the potatoes dry outside for a day before you bring them inside. It is important that you remove all the potatoes from the ground, as this prevents the transfer of diseases to the following year.
