Professional cultivation

De Bolster's pumpkins have been developed for organic arable farming. Our vining types are remarkably uniform in size and shelf life. This plant type has the property that the plot closes up quickly, which suppresses weeds. The 'bush' types are particularly productive and give the opportunity to control mechanical weeds for longer.

  • Plant density: 10,000-15,000 /ha
  • Cultivation time: 90-100 days
  • Yield: 30-35 T/ha
  • Shelf life: 3-4 months

How do you sow Pumpkins?

Sow pumpkin seed on the firm, moist soil layer. It is usually located at a depth of 3-5 cm. For optimal germination, it is important that the soil at sowing depth has a temperature of at least 18°C at the time of sowing and the following week. A soil that is too cold or too wet slows down the germination process, which means that fungi and bacteria can affect the germinating seeds. Germination takes place very quickly above 22°C, which means that these plant pathogens have less chance to strike.

How do you harvest and store pumpkins?

As soon as the fruit stem begins to cork and the leaves begin to die, the fruits are ready to harvest. For best storability, it is advisable to harvest the fruits as soon as possible after the first signs of ripening to avoid possible sunburn damage. After harvesting, the fruits are best stored at a temperature between 8°C and 12°C. It is important to continue to ventilate the pumpkins well during storage.
