How do you plant Jan Bos hyacinth bulbs?

Soil type

Hyacinths need well-drained soil. If the soil in your garden contains heavy clay, mix in some sharp sand or peat to improve the soil.

Location of hyacinths

Hyacinths like sunny places but can also withstand full shade. The advantage of planting in the shade is that the hyacinth flowers bloom longer than when they are in full sun.

Planting depth and planting distance hyacinths

Plant the Jan Bos hyacinth bulbs from September to December with the point upwards. For a beautiful result, plant the flower bulbs about 15 cm deep and 15 cm apart. In this way, the leaves and the hyacinth flowers have enough space to grow well and the bulbs are at the same time protected against severe frost.

Planting hyacinths in pots

Due to their low height, hyacinths are also perfect for planting in pots. Make sure that the pots are deep enough and plant the bulbs a little closer to each other. During dry periods, water the hyacinths sufficiently and place the pots indoors in case of frost.

To make the pots more attractive during the winter, other early flowering plants can also be planted or sown above the hyacinth bulbs, such as winter flowering violets or forget-me-nots.

When do Jan Bos hyacinth bulbs bloom?

Jan Bos hyacinths bloom from the end of March to April. Each hyacinth bulb produces a trunk with a large elongated flower with buds (also called nails).

The number of buds per flower depends on the size of the bulb, the bigger the bulb, the bigger the flower. Large hyacinth bulbs can produce 60 to 70 nails. Because such large flowers are very heavy, especially in the rain, they can easily snap. Therefore, place the hyacinth bulbs preferably at a sheltered spot.
