Growing chicory is a lot of fun and happens in 2 phases:
- growing carrots
- growing heads (pulling)
Chicory can be grown indoors all year round or in the open ground from May. Use airy soil and pots about 25 cm deep so that the roots can grow well. Do not sow the seeds too deeply and keep the soil moist, the seeds germinate after 1-3 weeks.
Harvest the roots around October and November. Carefully remove the roots including the leaves from the soil and store them in a dry and cool place so that the leaves can wilt and all nutrients are stored in the roots. Once the leaves have wilted, the leaf can be cut about 2-3 cm above the root.
The chicory heads can be grown in 2 ways:
- with covering soil (outdoors)
- without covering soil (indoors)
Growing with cover soil (outdoors)
Use loose soil and mix with compost or sand if necessary to promote airiness. Plant the roots close together in a hole and make sure that the tops of all the roots are even. Cover the roots with a layer of airy soil of 15-30 cm.
The harvest period can be extended by varying the thickness of the covering soil. The soil can also be covered with plastic so that the soil warms up faster in spring and harvesting can be done earlier.
Growing without screed (indoors):
Plant the roots just like outside, but in a large deep pot or, for example, a bucket. Let the roots protrude slightly above the ground and put the pot in a dark and cooler place, 10 - 15 degrees. You can also cover the jar with an inverted bucket.
Keep the soil moist but not too much. Water a little as soon as the soil dries. After 3 - 6 weeks the chicory heads will appear and the harvest can be started.
