Cultivation method / sowing Bhut Jolokia Red

Peppers are plants that need heat. The seeds of these plants must be at the right temperature even before sowing. Start sowing in February. Mix four parts of potting soil and one part of sharp sand.

  • Place the seeds and cutting soil in a heated room a day in advance.
  • Moisten the soil well and place the seeds on top.
  • Give lukewarm water, sprinkle a thin layer of sand over it and cover with a glass plate or use a (heated) culture or greenhouse.
  • Place on the windowsill or above the radiator at a temperature of 20-25 ° C so that the soil temperature remains around 28-30 ° C.
  • As soon as the first green blades become visible, the glass plate will come off.
  • Water occasionally with an atomizer or plant sprayer.
  • After about ten weeks you can plant the plants (outdoors) in a pot. Wait until the end of May (after Ice Saints) and preferably until the beginning of June.

Plant out in a pot

Peppers are best planted in a pot. That way you can easily move them with the sun. The plants do not only need heat during growing up. They prefer to be in a sunny, sheltered spot.

  • Take a large pot of about 15 liters.
  • Place three plants in the pot, the same distance apart and as close to the pot edge as possible.
  • Preferably place the pot near a sunny brick wall facing south: the stones still give off quite a bit of heat in the evening.
  • Always remove the first flower that grows on the plant, so you get a better harvest later.
  • After four to six weeks, you should fertilize the soil every week. Do that with liquid fertilizer for flowering houseplants or fertilizers for window boxes and tub plants

Harvest peppers

Peppers are ready to pick if you can no longer push the flesh. Peppers are best cut while keeping the stem as long as possible.
