Growing chicory – sowing instructions

Growing chicory is a lot of fun and is done in 2 phases:
- growing roots
- growing crops (pulling)

Phase 1 - Growing chicory roots

Chicory can be grown indoors all year round or in the open ground from May onwards. Use airy soil and approximately 25 cm deep pots so that the roots can grow well. Do not sow the seeds too deep and keep the soil moist, the seeds will germinate after 1-3 weeks.

Harvest the carrots around October and November. Carefully remove the roots including the leaves from the soil and store them in a dry and cool place so that the leaves can wilt and all nutrients are stored in the roots. Once the leaves have wilted, the leaf can be cut about 2-3 cm above the root.

Phase 2 - Growing chicory heads (pulling)

Pulling the heads of chicory can be done in 2 ways:
- with topsoil (outdoors)
- without topsoil (indoors)

Towing with topsoil (outdoors)

Use loose soil and, if necessary, mix it with compost or sand to promote airiness. Plant the roots close together in a hole and make sure that the tops of all the roots are even. Cover the roots with a 15-30 cm layer of airy soil.

By varying the thickness of the cover soil, the harvest period can be extended. The soil can also be covered with plastic so that the soil warms up faster in the spring and harvesting can be done earlier.

Pulling without topsoil (indoors):

Plant the roots just like outdoors, but in a large deep pot or, for example, a bucket. Let the roots protrude slightly above the ground and put the pot in a dark and cooler place, 10 - 15 degrees. You can also cover the pot with an inverted bucket.

Keep the soil moist, but not too moist. Give a little water as soon as the soil dries. After 3 - 6 weeks, the chicory crops will appear and can be harvested.
