Sowing basic green beans

Open field cultivation

Standard green beans can generally be sown a little earlier than pole green beans. Because stock green beans do not need support, choosing a suitable location is easier.

Sow the standard green beans directly in the field from mid-May to mid-July. For early cultivation, sow under glass from mid-April and plant out in the second half of May.

Greenhouse cultivation

For early cultivation, standard beans can be pre-sown in a greenhouse from the end of March to mid-May.

Pitch

During germination and during the initial growth period, the stem beans need a lot of heat. After that, beans also need sufficient heat and moderately moist soil. Therefore, choose a sunny and sheltered position in the garden or greenhouse. Especially with early or late sowing, the results are highly dependent on the weather.

In wet and cold weather, the beans germinate poorly, so do not sow earlier than the indicated period. The beans can also be pre-soaked overnight to speed up germination.

All standard beans require a humus-rich, slightly moist soil, but do not use fresh farmyard manure, this contains too much nitrogen and causes too much leaf growth.

Keep a planting distance of approximately 40 x 10 cm.

Harvest green beans

Harvest green beans from July to September, depending on the sowing period. In general, pick the green beans as young as possible, then the taste is best.
